OBITUARY – LATE EDWARD JOHN HANLEY.
The late Edward John Hanley, who was 71 years of age, met his death on Tuesday of last week accidentally, while employed as the Norseman Gold Mine. The late Mr E. J. Hanley was butchering in Coolgardie in the early days. Later he started a business of his own. He held the position of Mayor of Coolgardie for a while. Becoming tired of the goldfields he disposed of his butchering business, and set out to seek new pastures and finally decided on Guilford, and set up in business. Later the wander-lust gripped him and he made his way to the South-West of W.A. After a time here the lure of the elusive nugget called, and once more he packed up and made his made to Southern Cross, prospecting in the district. He went from here to Norseman where he worked for Mr J. Crabbe in his butchering business for about six years, until recently when he started on the Central Norseman Gold Mine as night watchman. An inquest was held at the Norseman Court House on Thursday, 5th November, before Mr W. G. Lewis. J.P., Acting Coroner, to inquire into his death. After hearing the evidence of Eric Prince and Allan Breeze, and Constable Hasleby, the Coroner returned the following verdict:— That Edward John Hanley came by his death at the treatment plant of the Central Norseman Gold Mine, at Norseman, on the 3rd day of November, 1942, as a result of coming in contact with the machinery of the treatment plant, there being insufficient evidence to establish the cause. Mr D. R. MacGregor, Inspector of Machinery, and Workman Inspector J. Wallace, appeared on behalf of the Mines Department. Mr W. Dutlon, superintendent of the Central Norseman Gold Mine, was also in attendance. Sergeant Kevin assisted the Coroner.
