Inquest. — The adjourned coronial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of John Hodges, who died at the Government Hospital on the 13th inst., was resumed yesterday before the acting coroner, Mr. P. Whelan, and a jury consisting of Messrs. H. G. Downey, J. McAuliffe, and S, Cook. The inquiry was conducted by Corporal Tyler. The evidence of John and Thos. Edwards was that on the afternoon of the 12th inst. they and the deceased were employed at the Great Boulder mine in sinking a winze. Deceased and John Edwards were hauling dirt by means of a windlass, and the deceased, after landing a bucket of dirt, was in the act of swinging it around when he slipped and fell into the winze. Thomas Edwards stated that he was engaged filling buckets at the bottom of the winze, a depth of 40 feet from the surface when Hodges fell on the bucket at the bottom. He was immediately conveyed to the drive. He was then conscious, but badly injured, and was subsequently conveyed to the hospital. Dr. Hill described the injuries sustained by the deceased and said that death was due to shock, consequent upon his having fallen down the winze.
'The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony and added that no blame was attachable to any person.
