Other Information
Norseman Cemetery records Robert Terence WOODS.

Alan Warne, Norseman miner, rescued Hilton Alwin McNamara, and attempted to rescue Robert Terence Wood from a fall of earth at the bottom of the main shaft of the Central Norseman goldmine in October, 1937. When a fall of earth buried his two companions Warne, after ringing for assistance, set to work to rescue his mates. Seven or eight tons of earth fell in the first slide, but falls continued until 20 tons had given way. Warne kept at the task of digging, and was later joined by other miners.

McNamara was extricated seriously injured, but Wood was killed.

Warne's bravery earned tributes from the Coroner, the mine's representative, the miners' inspector, the police sergeant, and the men's inspector, and he was awarded the bronze medal of the Royal Humane Society.
