The Sons of Gwalia GM near Leonora has the unenviable position as having more deaths per number of miners than any other gold mine in Western Australia. This article shows that only a few years into production (May 1901) it was already proving a dangerous place to work.
This company, which is generally known as ‘Grizly Gwalia’, owing to the unenviable notoriety it has gained as a death trap for its employees, was registered in London in January 1898. Its original area consisted of 168 acres, made up of seven blocks of 24 acres each. The original authorised capital was £300,000, in £1 shares, of which the vendors collared the mere flea bite of £250,000, leaving the balance of £50,000 to provide working capital. In May 1901 the capital was increased to £350,000, by the creation of 50,000 new Shares. Of these shares 18,000 were given in exchange for a fresh lot of 168 acres of salt bush scrub, misnamed gold leases, over which the company acquired a twelve months option a year previously.
The company is now blessed, or cursed, with 611 acres, or nearly a square mile of W. A. territory. Under the circumstances the company is fairly entitled to call itself the ‘Sons of Gwalia Estates’. This enlargement of area shows great consideration for the impetuosity of the W.A. Government, as the company now pays £611 a year into the Treasury for rent, the greater part for land which is absolutely worthless, either to the country or to the company. Pegging out leases and granting options to the company may appear to be a fair and square deal to the uninitiated, but to insiders it proves the marvellous cuteness of the Bewick-Moreing crowd.
