While walking along the 600ft level in search of water, he fell down a winze, a distance of 100ft, breaking his neck. There had been planks placed over the winze, and they were supposed to have been nailed down. These had moved, the result of effects of nearby explosives being set off. In the darkness McCombe did not see the shaft.
