Other Information
James Freestone married Jane Meek in 1890 in Horsham, Victoria, after the death of his first wife Catherine. There were 4 children from each marriage.
In 1899 he was working as an Engine Driver at the Great Eastern Gold Mine in Lawlers. His wife and children had remained living in Victoria. Whilst attempting to fix one of the belts in connection with the battery (ore-crushing machinery) he was drawn under a pulley and killed.
An inquiry found that he came to his death accidentally while performing his duties as Engine Driver. The inquiry also found that the company was guilty of negligence in not providing any means of protection whatsoever for workmen at the place where the accident occurred.
Jane re-married to August Wills in 1906. W.A. BDM Reg. No. 1363/1899.
