Wasley was at the 100ft level taking a sheet of iron off the top of the skip when he overbalanced and fell backwards into the next shaft. He crashed down 1600 feet on top of another skip which was at the bottom of the south shaft. He was frightfully injured, and death must have been instantaneous.
