On the day of his fatal injury, Robert Swainston was working with his mate at the 2600-foot level. A piece of rock came away and struck him. Mr Swainston was promptly taken to hospital, where he died about two hours later.

Mr Swainston was born in Melbourne and had been working on the goldfields for 17 years as a miner. In that time he he had become a very popular man due to his many years as a steward of the Miners Union, as well as in his personal dealings. Many of his former mates marched behind his hearse, and prominent in the procession was the Mine Car, carrying various officials of the Golden Horseshoe mine.
Mr Swainston's only son had enlisted and was serving in France, and one daughter resided in Boulder.
