Other Information
He had already been on a day shift when his brother requested that he should take the evening shift as well so that the brother could take his girlfriend to a dance. Thomas’s wife was against his doing this second shift as he appeared to be too tired. Unfortunately, she was so annoyed at his agreeing to do the second shift that she didn’t kiss him goodbye when he left to take up the shift. She regretted this forever after.
The coroner’s report stated that his death would probably not have happened if the stope had been properly timbered. Mrs Clews was awarded a compensation of a thousand pounds when in effect she could have got substantially more by court action and was left with four young children to support.
His brothers gave their sister-in-law twenty-five pounds for his gun, tools, furniture, and house.
Mrs. Clews packed up what she could and moved to Perth where she spent most of the compensation money on buying a house for the family to live in. The eldest son left school at fifteen to help support the family.
